1. Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom (1975)



IMDB summary “Four fascist libertines round-up nine adolescent boys and girls and subject them to a hundred and twenty days of physical, mental and sexual torture”. But this is much more than that, to be precise this movie is just an awful depressing experience. The atrocities of Italian politicians where the corrupt Italian politicians are leering pedophiles, eat bowls of feces.

This film is controversial for its depiction and exploration of themes like political corruption, abuse of power, sadism, perversion, sexuality and fascism. Further more the intensely graphic violence, relentless sexual depravity, and horrific murder makes it more disgusting to even watch. The eighteen teenage boys and girls were under 18 which intensifies the horror. The director of the movie Pier Paolo Pasolini was murdered before the release of this film. Some say his murder was because of the political reasons while others blame his film creation as the cause.




2. Cannibal Holocaust (1980)



 
The film tells the story of a missing crew who had gone to the Amazon to film cannibal tribes. When they are reported to be a missing, a rescue mission led by the New York University professor. They recover the film crew’s lost cans of film. Upon viewing the footage they all are shocked and decide to destroy the footage so that no other person can view the disturbing horror that they have seen. This movie is controversial for its graphic violence, obscenity. The director of the movie was arrested after the film premiere because the film was believed to be a snuff film. There were even rumors that the actors were actually murdered during the shooting of the film.

Earlier the movie was believed to be a snuff film, the director was arrested on the charges of murder of the actors, and the movie was confiscated. 3. A Serbian Film (2010)

Some things you just can’t unsee, and A Serbian Film is something that is beyond the accepted norms, a sick flick. it’s filled with misogyny, brutality, violence, and questionable content. The “newborn porn” “new genre” and such tags by the critics are enough to place this movie in the records of cinematic obscenity.

Not only is child abuse and child pornography is depicted within this movie, but also the horrendous idea of ‘newborn porn’is depicted. In the later part of the movie a five-year old boy is shown getting raped by his father. The graphic depictions of rape, necrophilia, child abuse and violence spawned world-wide controversy. This movie is banned in several countries.
 

4. I Spit On Your Grave (1978)



The classic rape and revenge film. Ever since its release the movie has gained a cult status. Story about an aspiring writer who is repeatedly gang-raped, humiliated, chopped, broken, and is left for dead by a group of five men. The second half of the movie features the woman systematically hunting down the people who’ve raped her and taking revenge. Many film critics panned the film for its graphic violence, nudity, obscene language, and lengthy gang rape scenes.

This film remains controversial to this day for its violence, lengthy depiction of rape scenes. Some critics called it the worst movie ever made, calling it a depressing experience. Many countries banned the movie calling it a glorified violence against the women. The movie has received a 18+ rating as it features a castration scene, and one of the most longest, violent gang-rape scenes of all time.


 




5. A Clockwork Orange (1971)



Set in future Britain, it follows the charismatic delinquent Alex DeLarge and the gang of misguided youths. A future-shock parable about free will, this vivid depiction of a charismatic gang leader gained instant notoriety for its extreme violence and prolonged scenes of sexual assault. Alex volunteers for an experimental aversion therapy developed by the government in an effort to solve society’s crime problem – but not all goes according to plan.
 

Controversy
The horrendous crimes of Alex and the graphic rape and violence scenes aren’t pleasant to view. The subsequent torture therapy of Alex makes it even more disturbing. It has received both an X rating in the US and a C for ‘condemned’ from the National Catholic Office for Motion Pictures. Stanley Kubrick, the director of the film received death threats to his family. The movie was very controversial and was withdrawn from release by Kubrick himself.
 

6. Antichrist (2009)



After losing their child, a grieving couple retreats to a cabin the woods to find some peace. Hoping to fix their marriage and to forget the pain of the death of their child. But things go from bad to worse. The man starts having strange visions and the woman starts exhibiting strong violent sexual behavior and sadomasochism. The film contains misogyny, explicit sex scenes, genital self-mutilation, torture scenes. However the movie was praised for its cinematography, for being unconventional, and for its artistic presentation.
 

Controversy
In the prologue Scene a couple is shown having sex while their young son fall from a window to his death on the ground below. This scene is quite disturbing. The graphic depiction of the woman drilling a hole through his husband’s leg, and then bolting a heavy grindstone through the wound is very disturbing and extremely unpleasant. Crushing the testicles of her husband with a block of wood, then masturbating him until he ejaculates blood! Now that’s fucking scary!
 

7. Birth Of A Nation (1915)



 
Released in 1915 this film is yet another controversial movie of all time. “A film, which glamorized the Ku Klux Klan and demonized African-Americans. The movie presented the black men as ignorant, sexually aggressive towards the white women. And depicted the Ku Klux Klan as a brave, courageous heroes. When the movie was released, audiences protested, NAACP even initiated a campaign to ban the film which was unsuccessful.

The Ku Klux Klan used this movie as a recruiting tool. This movie is also responsible for the formation of the second KKK era. NAACP campaigned to ban the film, when they were unsuccessful they made the movie Intolerance in response to the Birth Of A Nation which perpetuated the racial stereotypes and glorified the KKK. Despite all the controversies this movie is considered a landmark, a masterpiece in the history of American Cinema.
 

8. The Passion Of The Christ (2004)



This film covers the final 12 hours in the life of Jesus, on the day of his crucifixion in Jerusalem. Religion is a taboo and a film on such a sensitive subject exploring the historical, theological aspects are heavily examined. Although it’s not the first Christ based film to be a subject to such heavy controversy, Martin Scorsese’s The Last Temptation of Christ was met with such controversies too. This movie is brutal, visceral and gory, featuring a 10 minutes whipping scene. Many Jews consider this film as Anti-Semitic.

The movie depicted that Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene were married and that their union produced a daughter. The Vatican called for a ban, stating that the movie is full of many false accusations, offences, and many historical and theological errors. The movie was banned in many countries, however they uplifted the ban later giving the movie a R-18 rating.
